Christy
future homeowner

Christy has spent years working hard to build a stable life for herself and her daughter, all while dreaming of a home they could truly call their own. Soon, through Habitat for Humanity of Delaware & Union Counties, that dream will become a reality.

Christy has spent 13 years working in the automotive repair industry, following nearly a decade in food service. She is grateful for the flexibility her current role provides, allowing her to work from home and be present for her daughter when needed.

For more than eight years, Christy has lived in a home with serious challenges, including water leaking into the basement that caused mold and wiring issues that nearly led to a fire. Even with those concerns, moving elsewhere in Delaware simply wasn’t affordable. Staying in the community was important to her, especially because of the positive experience her daughter has had in the local school system.

Christy first learned about Habitat through her mother, who knew several local families who had partnered with the organization. Seeing how hard Christy had worked over the years, and how difficult it had become for working families to get ahead as costs continued to rise, her mother encouraged her to apply.

Outside of work, Christy and her daughter enjoy spending time together on the water, watching college football, and spending time with family. “I can’t wait to have a space where I can host a holiday,” she said.

Their future home represents more than affordability. It means having a safe, permanent place where they can decorate freely, plant flowers, and spend fall evenings around a fire pit together. “An affordable mortgage would mean I can save to help my child in college, and that maybe we can take a vacation once a year,” Christy said. In her future Habitat home, Christy looks forward to having space for a dedicated office she can close at the end of the workday.

When she received the call that she had been accepted into the program, Christy was overwhelmed with emotion. “I’ve been working so hard to have something that’s mine, and it’s really going to happen,” she said. Through happy tears, she immediately called her mother to share the news. Now, she is excited to help build the home she hopes will be their forever home.
